(almost) Six months on for our GradStarts!

Closing in on six months into their one-year program, the 2024 SESLHD Nursing and Midwifery GradStarts have well and truly settled in.

Our District is serious about investing in careers where continuous professional development is valued and supported. We have a commitment to nurturing talent, consolidating training, and offering clinical opportunities in a range of areas of nursing.

This commitment is made possible through mentorship and support from facilitators, educators, nurses and midwives, and the non-clinical nursing and midwifery teams.

Lucy Parkin, Sutherland Hospital GradStart says that she “feels so lucky to be in such a supportive environment as I navigate my way through the diverse clinical skills and challenges that come along with being a new grad.”

Being a GradStart means that no day is the same, something that Ricky Magtoto, Mental Health Service (MHS) GradStart has learnt: “every day presents a new challenge and opportunity for growth.” Ricky, and fellow MHS GradStart, Georgia Butler, both agree that “the mentorship and encouragement provided by the team has helped (me) navigate the complexities of the field and grow both personally and professionally.”

It is a big adjustment going from university placements to hospital employment, but Harrison Ayres, St George Hospital (SGH) GradStart has said that “support was provided from the moment I walked in the door to the first day on the ward.”

“This along with regular in-services ensured my transition was smooth and easy.”

Utkarsh Gurung, War Memorial Hospital (WMH) GradStart has said that SESLHD “offers unparalleled opportunities for hands-on learning, close-knit team collaboration, and personalised mentorship.”

This is mirrored by Ian Harry, WMH GradStart who “looks forward to learning more and contributing to a great patient outcome.”

Whilst there is still lots of learning to be done in the program, Sarah Roots, SGH GradStart has said “I feel like I have already grown and developed my knowledge and skills so much in such a short period of time, I can only imagine how much growth I will be able to accomplish.”

Applications for GradStart 2025 will be opening soon for people completing their nursing or midwifery degree between 1 June 2024 and 31 May 2025. We want people to apply that want to join our person-centred and innovative team!
